Frequently Asked Questions
What is sales tax nexus? +
Nexus is a connection to a state strong enough to require you to collect its sales tax, created by physical presence or, since Wayfair, by exceeding a sales or transaction threshold there.
How do I know where I have to collect? +
We run a nexus study across every state you sell into, comparing your revenue and transaction counts to each state’s economic-nexus threshold.
When did online sellers have to start collecting? +
After the 2018 Wayfair decision, states can require collection based on sales volume alone. Most set a threshold around $100,000 or 200 transactions per year.
Do marketplaces like Amazon collect for me? +
Marketplace facilitators collect and remit on marketplace sales, but your own website and other channels are still your responsibility. We track both.
What happens if I have not been collecting? +
We assess your past exposure and, where it makes sense, use a Voluntary Disclosure Agreement to limit look-back periods and waive penalties.
How do I register in a new state? +
We handle registration with each state’s revenue department and set up your filing calendar so you start collecting and remitting correctly from day one.
Are my products even taxable? +
It varies by state, some tax software or services, others exempt them. We map taxability for each product you sell in each state where you have nexus.
How often will I file sales tax returns? +
States assign monthly, quarterly, or annual frequencies based on your volume. We track each due date and file on your behalf so none are missed.
What are the penalties for filing late? +
Most states charge a late-filing penalty plus interest, and repeated lapses can trigger audits. Staying on a managed calendar is far cheaper than catching up.
Do I need to collect on exempt sales? +
Not if you hold a valid exemption or resale certificate for that customer. We help you collect and store certificates so exempt sales hold up under audit.
What does sales tax service cost? +
Pricing scales with the number of states and filing frequency. We quote after the nexus study so you only pay for the jurisdictions you actually file in.
